Scindapsus pictus - Silver Pothos is known by many other names, some being synonyms and none of which are agreed upon by everyone. You can find it listed under such names as Satin Pothos, Silk Pothos, Silver Philodendron, Epipremnum aureum, Silver Splash Pothos and many other variations. This plant is very similar to Scindapsus pictus var. 'Argyreus' but where Argyreus has more defined spots and edge markings, this plant has a wider area of silver splashing arcross the leaf that is less defined. Holding it under a light, the silver on some leaves appear to shimmer and take on a satin look. Scindapsus pictus is a slower growing vine that is a member of the Araceae family and native to Thailand and the Philippines. Not as common of a houseplant as Pothos, but it does well in normal household environments but will appreciate higher humidity. This species features rounded-heart-shaped leaves that curve to one side at the tip. In time, it can easily grow to lengths of several feet long. For best color, keep in bright, indirect light but it will also do well in shady areas. Water when top 1/2" of soil dries out. To avoid rot, don't overwater or allow to sit in water.

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:
Scindapsus pictus - Silver Pothos will do well in the average household environment. It should be kept in moderate lighting to maintain its color and should be kept away from drafts. It will tolerate and appreciate the top soil drying out between waterings. Due to the size of Scindapsus pictus, it is not recommended for container gardens or terrariums. It is often treated as any other pothos and grown in a hanging basket or being trained to grow along ledges or shelving in your home.
Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:
Scindapsus pictus - Silver Pothos is a climbing vine that will grow to cover the background and hardscape. Due to it's fairly large, rounded leaves, it is a great plant for the naturalistic vivarium and will provide egg laying and calling sites for dart frogs. It will display its best colors under bright light, but will also grow just fine under dimmer lighting conditions. Suitable for a vivarium, it does not require any air circulation to thrive. Since it can be sometimes sensitive to soggy soil, it is imperative to have good drainage in your vivarium to ensure the long-term health of this plant.
Josh's Frogs offers a wide variety of glass terrariums, container garden soils, drainage layers and other supplies for all of your indoor gardening needs.
As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home.
